Default A3 losing power/acceleration loss

I have a 98 A3 1.8T Sport which has covered 220k miles. Today it started losing power. Initially it was just a stutter when cruising that happened only once. After a further 5 miles or so, it stalled during idling. It wouldn't start, so I left it for a few minutes, then it started. A further few miles, and it started to lose power. Once this occurred, the throttle seemed to have no effect at all - push it all the way down and . . nothing. However, once the throttle was released and reapplied it was fine again for a few seconds. This is now happening at all times. It seems quite reliable in its frequency - lose power, come off throttle, reapply, its fine . . . almost exactly 5 seconds later lose power, . . repeat forever!

The only notable recent event was yesterday when reversing down an overgrown lane, the plastic engine under tray caught on the undergrowth and broke off. I've looked for obvious signs of damage, but can't see anything.

Can anyone help?

Tim

Not yet - I tried, but turning up at a garage at 6pm on a Saturday was a tad optimistic. Hopefully get it done on Monday.

For future reference . . no error codes were showing on the garage's computer (a 'Launch'). During the investigation, the airflow meter signal was measured, and varied with airflow (I don't know the exact details). However, an auto electrician was eventually called, and he found that the airflow meter was measuring the incorrect value. Replaced this, along with the plugs which were coked up . . and its all good

So its the airflow meter with incorrect values measured, so that's what caused the problem... I had the same problem with the loss of power and acceleration of my car...

I have the same problem as described, brought it to the dealership and they found nothing wrong with it and there are no lights on. It seems to occur more after fueling, then starts, get on highway, gas pedal goes limp for 5-6 minutes then resumes. This TT needs help.
