Default A3 in the States?

My cousin is moving to the United States and would like to bring his A3.
Is this possible?
What modifications would be required?
The car's platform, etc. is that of the A4 which is sold here. I would think one could get it serviced in California.
I would appreciate any thoughts or suggestions.
Thanks

Default Re: A3 in the States?

If he's moving here and staying here for good, then he won't be able to bring it with him unless he has 3 more of them to bring with him. 2 to crash test and 1 for the EPA. Since there's no A3s in the US it'll be virtually impossible for him to bring it here, unless he has lots of cash. He could bring it here as a tourist vehicle, but that only lasts for like a year. Tell him to buy a Golf V6 4Motion and bring that over...probably easier to get in the US since we already have the Golf.

Default The Golf 4Motion wouldn't make it through the traps without EPA and NHTSA paperwork…

…so again, the importer would be responsible for submitting all data validating the car conforms to ALL applicable FMVSS requirements. Don't count on getting helping hand from either AoA/VWoA or VAG –– Neither is happy with the idea of third parties importing their cars.

Remember that crash testing and EPA submission won't guarantee anything in and of themselves. What happens if the car fails any of the FMVSS or EPA tests? BTW EPA requires 100,000 mile validation on many emissions components.

If he were to import anything that isn't papered (ie full EPA and NHTSA sign off) as a Tourist vehicle and he has a work or education visa, the visa will be summarily revoked if the car stays in the country for more than one year. So he'd be out of the country and out of a car.<p>2000 Nogaro/Silver - S4

Default No it isn't - I agree with Chris

A3 platform includes those listed but is in no way similar to the a4/passat platform - if it was then they would all have longditudinal engines too - not transvere

Default 2953 is right

DesertRat was asking about platform and not car model. 2953 listed all the vehicles under the A4 Platform and that includes the A3/S3 and remember that I said Platform. Now the Audi Model A4 and VW Passat I believe are under the B5 Platform.

Default Exactly - you cannot possibly say that the a6 has the same "platform" as the a3 then?

simple dynamics point to floorplan, suspension, engine mount differences between a3/a4/a6 etc - these are NOT the same - depends on your definition of platform??

Default You're confusing platforms (AO1, A4, B5) with models (Lupo, A3, Passat)

Audi uses a nomenclature system that is the same as VAG's platform system.

An A3 (Audi model) is built off the VAG A4 platform. The A4 and A6 (Audi models) are built off the VAG B5 platform.

The Lupo (Volkswagen model) is built off the VAG AO1 platform.

The upcoming 12-cylinder Volkswagen will be built of the VAG D1 platform.
