US law sucks, it's daft not to let a car in that conforms to standards in the rest of the world.

Default Yeah, most American car junkies know that. What's your point?

Default The combination of a base component set and assembly architecture…

… for a vehicle or line of vehicles forms a platform.

The baseline of a platform is a set of parts many (but not all of which) may be shared with other vehicles. Architecture is the assembly sequence and spatial points needed to put the parts together. While things like suspension knuckles, stampings, wiring harnesses and gaskets comprise the component set items, weld head placement, slip planes, weld points and body shop gate configuration are architectural items. Combine them to make more than one type of vehicle and you have a platform

But my favorite definition of a platform is still, "a large accumulation of parts flying in extremely close formation at very low altitude that approximate the form of an automobile."

This explains a lot of GM, Renault, Chrysler and Toyota products of the 1960s and 1970s.
2000 Nogaro/Silver - S4

Default Ok so...

whlist I agree that Audi/Vw etc share the same parts bin for many models, what Chris and myself meant was referring to floorpan/ chassis - whatever you care to label it - and as such - the golf/a3/tt/leon/bug share this floorpan the a4/passat etc do not. They may fall into the same architechture to manufacture but are not the same car - even the bora (jetta in US) varies from the golf from the chassis point of view. Maybe we got lost in nomenclature.

Default Right on both points…

Audi A4, VW Passat and Audi A6 are all off one platform (B5) and Golf, A3, Leon, Octavia, Beetle et al, built off another (A4).

And I believe you are spot on, it was a nomenclature jumble.

VAG has a new coding system that is even more arcane.
2000 Nogaro/Silver - S4

He's talking about the platform called A4, not the Audi model A4. It's all got horribly confusing.
Rob
