it depends on a couple of things
1. the connector & pinout used for the auto dimming mirror.
2. the cam lock size and shape used in the stock mirror.
If the simmilarities run deep between the stock mirror and a compass mirror found in another model a direct swap shouldnt be hard at all.

run from fuse block and tuck behind/under headliner. could even tap into map lights or something. i can't imagine the cam-lock mounts being much different between models.

I've been driving for 30 years and never once can I think of a time when I navigated by eight-point compass. I just can't imagine how that's useful at all -- I mean, every highway tells you what direction you're headed.
Do plot a course before you leave and say, "I need to head NNW today and hold that bearing for 100 miles".
If you really want one, you can check out DONNELLY.com -- they make most domestic OEM mirrors. I added a dimming mirror to my Jeep years ago, and one option was a hideous green compass window in the mirror. On the cheap, Pep Boys and Autozone sell those little magnetic compasses that glue to your dashboard...

When driving in downtown Boston, it can be very useful knowing which direction is which. With the sheer number of one way streets, that aren't straight or even "even-odd" getting turned around in the financial district can result in taking a long time to get your bearings. Especially when you approach the "big dig" zone where they constantly change the streets around. (though they're getting better about it).
And I've lived here my whole life, and I still get lost down there, and wouldn't mind a compass in the car.
