anyone know the weight of the stock hood? i'm looking at a carbon fiber one weighing 15-18 pounds

A CF hood for a Miata, with a smaller hood weighs 16-20lbs. If the hood has no bracing or supports, which are possible given the low weight you cited, it will bulge badly at speed. I'd see if you can check it out in person, hopefully on someone else's car.
One other thing, please, please, please paint it to match the car! Nothing worse than the "I just go my car from the body shop, but it wasn't finished" look of the black CF hood on a non-black car. It looks very ghetto.
