I'm glad to have removed that ashtray. It took a little work to get the mat installed in its place, but a friend and I finally got the fitment just right, with the edges underneath the handles on the sides.
But looking at the Bentley's manual, I see that I'm missing the trim piece (6) shown in the drawing. Has anyone else gotten this trim piece, and do you have a part number by any chance? [The mat (2) that I received did not come with a trim piece.]
I"m also linking to a few pictures of the mods....

Pics of my new taillights and the ashtray removal

with the ashtray is curved and doesn't work well with the non-ashtray tray. I agree that you can't tell it's not there unless you feel up below the A/C controls.

trim piece that is more at the front of the bin, about 3/4" x 6"; it covers the 8mm bolts that hold the grab bars, and fills the gap on top of the ashtray delete bin.
The double din doesn't use this; the trim illustrated is quite a bit wider than the single din cover, has lots of holes and tabs, and fits the bottom of the stack.
I'm citing this from memory - I'd take a look, but my double din car is in Savannah.

Easier than trying to follow Bentley's. Never did get the grab handles entirely removed, but after removing all three fasteners, it was loose enough for government work.

sometimes hard to get the 5mm allen heads to drop, which is necessary to remove the bars; but as long as you moved them enough to tuck the edges of the bin, you're golden.
After looking at the pics you posted above, I'm beginning to think that Audi may have 3 different trims on the stack bottoms. I did a single din concert, and my daughter's is a double din Bose. Your front bin trim looks a bit bigger, or i'm truly getting senile.
