There is a chance that the PCV valve is bad - that will cause it to push oil into places it shouldn't go. You can usually tell if this is a problem by removing the oil filler cap and put your hand over the opening (or some put a rubber glove over it). If there is a slight negative pressure, it's working correctly. If it's blowing lots of gasses OUT of the fill port, then your PCV valve is stuck and must be replaced. This can cause massive oil consumption. If that's the problem, make sure to NEVER go back to the shop that was quoting you a new engine as the minimum fix.

I'd look at the PCV - it's the one thing that can cause heavy oil loss / consumption, other than the obvious internal problems like worn rings or valve seals (which require rebuilding the motor).
