Default Is AudiUsa correct?

I clicked on Learn more (http://storage.audiusa.com/site/a3_32q_us.shtml) about A3 3.2q and the Quattro description says:

Audi's permanent all-wheel drive system celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. In the Audi A3 3.2, that means extraordinary handling and control, equally welcome on urban streets and in more rugged landscapes.

Is the Haldex system in A3 really permanent all-wheel drive? I thought I read here that it is a front wheel drive and engages only when it detects slippage (some kind of real time all-wheel drive)?

Default I think because you do not engage it(turn on/off) like in some trucks or SUVs

they consider that permanent. At least that is how I interpret it.

than it seems that the statement that A3 3.2q is permanent 4 wheel drive is not correct and misleading just like they initially said it was FSI engine....

Have you had a quattro car from Audi before? I can't believe that the quattro in the 3.2 A3 is any different than the one in my A4. The system is permanent all wheel drive, all the time. It's what Audi is famous for.

Default Yes, it's completely different--Haldex in the TT and A3, Torsen in the A4, A6, A8.

Haldex is used with transverse-mount engines, Torsen with longitudinal-mounts.

Thans for the link. Good stuff. But unless I don't understand it correctly Haldex main difference from Torsten setups in A4/6/8 is that it is not 50/50 (or 40/60 in new S4s) but rather 100/0 (FWD) and engages only if it detects slippage in the back wheels? It's more of a "Real time all wheel drive". This is why I quesitoned AudiUSA saying that A3 has a permanent AWS Quattro...

Default Correct. I think AoA is differeniating it from stuff where you have

to hit a switch to activate the system. Haldex is there all of the time - but only acts when you need it.

The upside is no additional driveline drag of the Torsen system when it's not working.

Search around for a system used by Volvo called PreX - but only on the SUV. It uses throttle position as well as ESP data to more proactively send power to wheels before slip even begins. Some people have adapted that to work in the previous gen of Haldex, and I imagine it won't be far behind for this generation.
