My 17.5" GF rig singlespeed fits with the front wheel off. A road bike may fit with the rear wheel in first and turning the front wheel...maybe, depending on frame size of bike.

I can get my road bike in my MINI with the front wheel off, but i also have to move the passenger seat foward. So i would assume you could do it in the A3. Probably without messing with the front seat.
The problem is you have to be really careful about scratches and stuff on your interior.
I eventually ponied up the $500 for the factory roof rack and have found it well worth it.

I currently have a 2001 A4 and with back seats down, a road bike fits fine with front tire off. I am also curious if this would work in an A3. Did you ever determine one way or another for sure?
