Break-in oil, Urban Myth?
Hey Folks. Is break-in oil an urban myth? I have about 400 miles on my 08 A3, 2.0T. I typically do the changes at half of Audi's schedule, so when the call for 10k i do 5k.
Is there such a thing as break in oil? Should it stay in for 5000 miles? Is there any reason not to do my change at 2500 miles? Is that too long.
THX!

I believe that is true...and in addition, I was told that changing the oil...
at a smaller interval is actually worse for the car. They claim the oil is more abrasive to the metals for the first "x" amount of miles, and that by having newer oil in the engine all of the time, the engine will wear down more quickly...
sounds like a load of crap to me...but at the same time, wouldn't they want you to change it as much as possible to make money...
take it for what it's worth...i'm only staying on for warranty period...so i'll change it when they tell me...

I usually keep my cars well past the warranty period. I'd love to get 150k trouble free miles. Don't buy the more abrasive stuff...

I am not sure about current practice, but Audi used to use a non-detergent fill at the factory
for break-in. If you're really curious, send a sample to Blackstone Labs or some other oil analysis company when you are near the mileage at which you would change the oil. It's only about $22.

http://www.blackstone-labs.com/gas_engines.html</a

Rubbish, most engine builders recommend usual OEM intervals.
You will find all sorts of things on the net and hear say. Oil isn't Whiskey, but it does serve the purpose to lubricate the engine and most contaminates are caused from start ups accumulating after time. When the car is first filled it does use a formula closer to ATF fluid which "acts" like a detergent to cleanse the engine of particulates associated with new engines since its of lighter viscosity which is common, and is caught by your filter. Synthetics were basically created to help turbocharged cars in the 80s to help prevent a breakdown in viscosity where it after time just burns and coagulates. Also shorter intervals are used as propaganda to increase revenue ::wink wink::, in all honesty most NA and Turbo/Supercharged engines can go 10-20k before needing an oil change with daily driving habits. Of course track addicts need them sooner and etc. Audi tends to use a synthetic petroleum blend in the past but oil companies have offered savings on larger quants of whatever is popular. Notice why Honda/BMWs use Castrol, Ferrari Shell based stuff etc etc.
