suggests that maximum RPM are not the problem as much as consistant RPM's. In other words, varying the RPM range is more important than being concerned about breaking the 4-6k range and that driving long distances at the same RPM is bad for piston break-in. (European motorcycle manufacturers recommend this.)
But it makes sense that maximum compression should not be hit before the pistol rings break-in correctly.
Answer: who really knows...

a motorcycle block is much smaller and able to dissipate heat more readily. This suggests it is more able to shrug off heat from high rpms and hot spots during break-in than a car engine.
In any case, running the same rpms is always a bad idea during break-in.

My daughter visited recently with her new baby, and liked my S line A3 so much that I'm buying her one to replace her 325 cabriolet. Unfortunately, the only car in the US with equipment she'd like is in Chicago.I plan to pick it up Saturday and drive it to Savannah to surprise her. I can take a bit of time, but I don't have enough slack to drive it around town for a few days before getting on the road.
Any suggestions?

each time the music changes.
So maybe 65 in 6th for a few minutes, then raise or drop the speed 5 or 10mph. Then drop a gear and repeat. If you come across exits that you see are also easy to also rejoin the highway, take those now and then. I just stay away from high load, which is large throttle openings. Gradually depress the accelerator, then ease off.

is that break-in is related to the number of cold starts and not the number of miles.
BTW, I'm sure you know this.
I just mention in case someone thinks that if they took a 500 mile drive that would not equate to 10-30 cold starts which would be typical of driving around town for that same amount of miles. Not explained very well but I think you get the idea.
When my car was new I managed 3 cold starts per day and each time brought it up to full temp.
