In case of bulb failure, the circuit is temporarily shut down....
After you replace a bulb, you need to power-cycle the car to reset it. This happens with taillamps, parking/sidemarkers, etc. also.
With no bulb burned out, it still times out if you leave the hatch open a while. Close/Open resets it.
