Cargo bar spread on the a3?
Is the bar spread 24"? trying to pick a cargo box but need to know what the bar spread is. I thought I read it was 24" but want to be sure.
thanks,
Bill

Do you mean front to back?
Open a front and rear door. You'll see a small indent (about 2") on the top of each door frame.
The front and rear racks will line up with those. If you measure the distance between them, it will give you a pretty good idea of the distance front to back.

Re: The distance between those two indents (on center) is 27"
Thanks!
for those of you with cargo boxes do you have any thoughts on the Yakima Skybox pro 16 vs the Thule Atlantis 1600?
The slope up at the back of the skybox is wasted space and it's heavier than the thule.
I'm sorta leaning towards the Atlantis 1600 but not quite sure.
The A3 Thule kit comes with 47" bars so I should be able to stick a bike next to the box (box is 36")

re: Box
I have the following setup (all Thule):
Foot pack 400XT
Fit Kit 2168
Load Bar: LB50
Fairing (don't know the part number, its an older one)
Box: 672 Evolution 1600 (replaced by the Atlantis)
Box works very well for my needs (week long vacations with wife and small child).
With the 50" bars, there is plenty of room for a bike (though I keep the box centered, since I don't yet have bike mounts.
Few pictures of it installed:

how long is that box? length skis that you can fit in it?
here's my setup...tough to tell from this crappy photo, but the overhang in front is ridiculous...
In order to clear the hatch I had to redrill and move it forward quite a bit. Reinforced the bottom to compensate for the overhang.
Your setup looks much more balanced. But I also have a feeling that you can probably only fit like a 180...190 max in there.

Skis??!? Silly gappers...
My snowboard is much shorter than the box, but the box is probably shorter than you'd want in a ski box. I use it more for cargo, than skis, though, so I'm not really sure how well they'd fit. If I was heading up every weekend, I'd probably buy a second box only for the purpose of heading north. Probably one that's shaped more like yours.
When I have taken the car up to the mountains, I actually just put the board in their carrying case and threw them in the back.
Funny story...
A number of years ago, when I bought my first Thule rack, I bought a ski rack to go with it. Living in New England, I used it exactly once. Never again would I subject skis or snowboards to the sheer amount of crap that gets thrown up from the roads in New England.
