Default -30 degrees c

Isn't it quite normal for a gearbox to be notchy when it's cold?
And on the topic of cold weather: Last winter I was in lapland skiing and the day we were supposed to return home (900 km oneway) it was -30 degrees. When i turned the key the buzzer started buzzing and that infamous brake warning light was on. The Audi didn't start on the first turn of the key that morning, and it didn't start on the second either. It started on the third turn, after about 30 secs (in total, all three tries) of turning the engine on the starter motor. When it eventually woke up it spluttered on three cylinders @ about 750 rpm for about half a minute, then it went up to about 1750 rpm and started running on all four cylinders. I let it idle for about 20 mins before we took off and then it ran OK. Which was good since we had to tow a friends Citroen XM (ever tried towing a dead citroen?)to the local garage, where it had to stay inside and warm up for 30 mins before it would start - on jump cables from the A3.
So don't you worry about your cars if the temperatrure falls below zero. That's everuday stuff here.
Although not now - it seems you have colder weather in britain now?

Default Re: -30 degrees c

Not colder, what we put up with is DAMP. It is just the way it is in the UK, I have tried to explain it to Americans but to no avail. People need to experience it themselves.
What oil do you use up there?
Do you use special compound winter tyres?

Default oil and tyres

I use fully synthetic 0W-30 (usually Mobil 1 or Neste 1).
We have spiked tyres here - I have Nokian Hakkapeliitta 1 with spikes and they're alright.
Anyways, if you had temperatures below zero yesterday or today then you had colder weather than we have had here for all autumn. The temp still hasn't fallen below zero and there's no snow, but everyone already have their spiked tyres on, eagerly waiting for winter. or not.
