Yes, they are LED, but not in the typical sense. They appear to use LED's to light a fiber optic ring, so it appears continuous rather than individual bulbs.

Yeah, who wants those dotted LEDs. No side dispersion so drivers to the side of the car barely see any light coming from the rear lights. Plus that dotted style became standard on almost every truck, the luxury exclusivity almost instantaneously became utilitarian safety feature like 3rd brake light.

<center><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3031/3114707934_02c61b5aac.jpg?v=0"></center><p>They illuminate a FI tube that distributes the light uniformly and nicer looking IMO. The actual brake light uses conventional bulbs and the LED's are basically on all the time.

I figured it was like the BMW's with the "LED tubes" but they weren't braking so I couldn't tell...I wish I had that look on my A4, maybe they'll spice it up at the end of the model cycle like they always do.
