Gordon1976,
I noticed that you made a comment about dropping $2,600 for replacing HPFP and camshaft. Was this on a 2006 A3? If so, know that you should be covered under an extended warranty. It's good for 10years/120,000 miles. There is a reimbursement form you can fill out.

It is for a 2006 A3. Where do I get this reimbursement form from and how do I know I have an extended warranty? I did not buy the car new, it was used, btw. Thanks for your help.

What year is your car? Many '06 owners are experiencing the "temp gauge stuck on C" problem. The dealer's first inclination is to replace the ECT sensor. Apparently most of these problems are caused by the thermostat going bad. The A3 ECU monitors the coolant temperature and if it doesn't follow a prescribed profile the ECU kills the temperature gauge. If it's reset (or after a couple of days) it will spontaneously start working again but will usually fail again. This happened to me and the only lasting repair was to replace the thermostat.
