Exhaust system clonking!

A3 1.8T Sport - 2000.
Has anyone else experienced an audible clatter from the exhaust system. My car has done 30k miles and has standard (one piece?) exhaust but recently when driving on poorly surfaced roads - almost anywhere in north Scotland - I can hear and feel the exhaust hitting somewhere underneath like a load of scaffold pipes.
Nothing is visibly adrift but clearly something has failed or is failing.
Any similar experiences and what fixed it?

I had this on my 99 1.8T sport - around 45k miles. Sounded horrible - like some metal tray was hanging off and scraping around when going over any bumps. Made me drive really tense and try and avoid even smallest road bumps.
Took it to dealer and they replaced middle exhaust box - problem solved. I can't remember what cost was - I'd only had it from them for 3 months so gave them a real earful about it and they paid half.
I had work to do the exhaust and a plastic undertray which had started to hand down on passenger side under the engine. Total cost should have been 230 pounds. I ended up paying 108. I'd imagine that if you have the same thing and get it done with Audi then that exhaust (+fitting, VAT) will probably cost you near to 200 pounds. I'd try specialist exhaust centers first to see what they quote. Exhaust's obviously not covered by warranty so you're probably best shopping around.
