Are the websites including the manufacturer ad fee? It's on the invoice. 1% of base invoice.

Default Yup, at some point you may need those dealer people to be on your side. Doesn't mean you

should roll over, but you do need to leave a little butter on the bread.

definitely not. 1% is ~$260, so where is the other $240 going?

Default If you are serious about that car, have them show you the invoice. I never had an issue doing that

if the customer wanted to see it. Of course if they weren't serious, it was another matter.

FYI: It's highly illegal to falsify an invoice and can result in immediate shut down of the entire dealership, so it's incredibly rare to have a dealer try that.

Default they showed me the invoice, but i didn't get a good look at it.

it was in a pdf file they showed me on their computer.

i was serious about the car, but after being able to sleep on it, and some further thought, im pretty sure that if i did buy the car yesterday, i would be regretting it today.

Default When I was shown the invoice, there was listed ~$200 for...

a "dealer prep" or "PDI" or something????

I asked specifically about advertising fees, and the sales manager told me it was illegal to charge for that; but he hold told me he pays this ~$200 fee on every vehicle he brings on the lot.

I only wish I had been allowed to keep a copy of that invoice...

Also interesting on that invoice is that it had the MSRP of "Murano Green Pearl" as $1000, whereas audiusa.com has it as $750! Come on, Audi! Get your story straight!

Given that every other number on the dealer invoice jibed with my Edmunds.com and Consumer Reports research, I totally "believed" the dealer invoice. I just did not understand the $200 invoice fee and totally new/different Murano Green Pearl Effect paint cost.

BTW, folks, if you're serious about purchasing a vehicle, spend the money on a Consumer Reports New Car Buying Report ($14). Edmunds is pretty good for free, but CR had information on the "trunk money" (to which April alludes above) that Edmunds never mentioned. It *was* $1500! Now it is over and done, and Edmunds never said anything...

Default The problem with the trunk money stuff is that it can be very specific - or general.

In the case of the A3, it was for a specific vin# range (very early cars) and only some dealers qualified. Trying to get the skinny on that and be accurate is difficult.

I have been hearing more and more about the itemized PDI charge. We did not have this when I sold cars. Perhaps they chose to itemize it since so many dealers are doing dealer trades and they want to keep things straight for cars that have or have not been PDI'd.
