Default GPS (in)decisions and the antenna

Ok, the GPS market is very confusing. I will ask only A3 related questions.

We didn't order the Nav. Do we still have the satellite antenna?

If yes, what type of antenna? Is it already routed to the console? If not routed, is it easy to do so?

If no, how good the reception will be if we decided to use the GPS receiver on a mount near the audio controls? I know that putting the receiver further towards the windscreen is better; but is it necessary? We have the open sky sytem; could it have a positive effect? (We live in the SF Bay Area; not many tall buildings here...)

Thank you,
Ali

Default PLUG and PLAY (Sat antenna)

the antenna is pre-wired for SAT, sirius or xm. NO problem, just plug and play, no vag required.

no idea about GPS.

I use a garmin 276 in my camper and it works great on the edge of the dash over the speedo plugged into the lighter. Obviously you get sunlight and glare issues that dont exist where the a3 nav screen is but whadayagonna do. I just got portable serius radio -is there an antenna wired to behind the head unit?

Default Re: gps

the advantage of a stand alone unit is its portability from vehicle to vehicle. The garmins are far beyond stock car systems as you can record tracks and transfer to a computer. Honestly i find gps in a car to be only somewhat useful, the screen is beautiful though; but on a dirtbike in the middle nowhere a gps is a life saver.
