Modern day traction control is much more sophisticated then you may think. You rarely get to use it unless you are beating the living daylights out of the car. Of course, you won't get the grip of a 4WD car but check out this video to see how far along we have come with modern day traction control..It could change your mind to save those extra few thousand, unless you live in a heavily snowed area, and help you garner more mental confidence, in the wet or slippery conditions, with a FWD car. ayethree, thanks for the info.
I agree that FWD is more than adequate for occasional winter driving. Quattro, sure. It's a great feature. But unless the engine has some extra power to cover the weight and drag issues, I'd prefer a FWD car for the 98% of my driving year.
