Sounds like a lot of work to me... it's not just an engine, you'd have to do the following to bring it to A3 1.8T spec:
* electrics including ESP which has various sensors, may require complete loom
* intercooler and plumbing
* gearbox (likely to have different ratios)
* wheels
* suspension
* brakes (not sure about this?)
* seats
* steering wheel / gear ****
* climate (depending upon year model)
... and then you wouldn't recover your money when you go to sell it as it will still be an A3 1.6 on paper.

Wouldn't it be easier to trade up?

I've seen an 1.8 replaced with 1.8T. Engine, turbo, electronics, + gears... That's all. however it's not worthed - better trade your car for 1.8T

I used to have an A3 1.6 with not even an aircondition.
I replace the engine with one from a TT 180hp. I also changed the brakes, add climatronic and changed the dashpanel with the one from TT that has trip computer too. Everything is working PERFECT!! After that i change the steering wheel with the S-Line one the whole interior from the A3 1.8T, bucket seats and arm rest. I also add Xenon headlights from a S3 and cruise control. I am very happy and satisfied from the whole project. Finally i made some tunning (ecu,airfilter,downpipe,n75h,samco) and the car is about 220hp and it is as fast as a stage 2 S3!! (from 0 to 200km/h is faster).
