Have an allorad (too big)... Should I get S4 Avant or A3 3.2?

Greetings,
I currently have a 2002 Allroad (manual transmision), which has been a great car, but we just got an Acura MDX to be the family wagon (growing family), and the Allroad is much bigger (and heavier) than I need for my daily commute. I'm looking for a fun car, but still like the wagon/sportback (for hauling kids, occasional bikes etc.), and also would like Quattro for occasional trips to Tahoe.
I am looking at both the A3 3.2, and an S4 Avant. The S4 Avant is nice, but really expensive (loaded MSRP is ~ $58k), and still kind of heavy. The A3, on the other hand is lighter, close the samne acceleration as the S4 Avant, but is missing some of the creature comforts (than can be ordered as options outside of the US), such as power passenger seats, etc...
Ultimately, I would like an S3 (or an r36 4-door), but there is no promise when (or if) these will ever arrive. I've also thought about a used M3, but really need the 2 back doors (and would also miss the quattro).
Anyone been through this decision? Thanks in advance for your insights.

The S4 avant is an amaing car, but I decided to get the same features for $20k less in a package that will be almost as fun. And yes, the V8 is terrible on gas (though the 3.2 isn't THAT much better). Also, you will need to be comfortable with the DSG transmission if coming from a manual. Go drive both and convince yourself either way.

in terms of top end performance. You will definatly be trading down HP and performance from an S4 to A3. You get to keep Quattro so you won't miss that. If you have 250 HP in the All Road you won't lose any HP. But twin turbos really do give a nice performance enhancement, and I miss the sound of them.
But, for 20K more? I would probably lease the A3 for a year (with option to buy). See if the S3 comes out, and if not, or you don't like the A3, get an S4 Avant.
Nice to have your problem
