Didn't you lower the car:
If so, it may be that the ball broke because the arm reached the end of it's range during suspension motion.
Ideally, with the car at normal load, the rotary arm on the sensor should be at mid-range in it's movement arc.
When an A3 is lowered, these sensors (or the anchor point for the ball) should be relocated so the sensor lever is at the same rest position as before.

Well, if you can get the ball out without destroying the socket on the end of the rod..
Measure it and go to www.mcmaster.com and search for "ball studs"
Skip forward to page 1139, and scroll down about half way to M"ounting Ball Studs and Ball Brackets "
Item # 4. available in several different metric sizes.
It may also be the same size as the ones used for the hood gas springs.
If it can't be removed from the rod, you can find the materials here to build a whole new one, instead of paying $$$$ for a whole new sensor assy.
