Homelink on 07 A3

I've had the opposite experience. Maybe too many were having your experience, so they nixed it.

I'm researching options for my '07 as well.
My Bentley manual (and VAG-COM!!) arrive tomorrow so I'm going to see what it would cost (and take to install) to get the '06 Homelink parts.
Another potentially much cheaper option (~$30) is to pick up a Homelink visor on ebay and install it somewhere in the car. It may be possible to wire up that module to the '06 switches for a stock look.

I did it precisely as the manual outlined. I can't remember exactly...
what the manual says, but I do recall that the only way to make it work was to do it exactly by the book.

'06 retrofit is mega $$$.
It looks like retrofitting an '06 Homelink module is ridiculously expensive. I found a part number for the transmitter behind the bumper and it's about $450. I didn't bother trying to find the actual button unit. Looks like I'll be trying the ebay retrofit option or a mirror replacement.

Ocean - it is very simple an you do not have to have the remote in front of the car.
I am not sure what your procedure was but you need to teach both the car and the device you plan to operate. First off, Homelink in an A3 only works when the car is on (dumb I know). Next, you need to erase all codes by holding both outer buttons on the Homelink until it blinks. Next press and hold the button you plan to learn on the Homelink until the light stays on. Then press and hold your devices remote button until the Homlink blinks. Now you have taught the Homeling to act as a remote. Now you have to teach the device to know that fact too. On the device (garage door opener) press and hold the remote control learn button and then quickly press and hold the Homelink button you just learned until the device starts to operate. That's it. You may need a partner to help you with the last step to make sure you do this quickly enough. Repeat for the other two buttons. Let me know if this helps...
