how exact is the fuel indicator?

how exact is the fuel indicator?
when i fueling my A3 (usually slightly at above the 1/4 line) it took about 43-46 liters until it fulls. so by judging the indicator i still had about 30% of the tank capacity (30% from 55 liter is 16.5 liter)
the question is: does 55 liter is the total fuel tank since it felt like my car had about 65liter fuel tank...come on, 45 liter for about 70% tank capacity?
once i had it drove until the empty indicator flash (the needle is in slightly above empty line) and had it fulled. it took almost 49 liter to fill her up
just curious thou....thank's in feedbacks

Re: how exact is the fuel indicator?
I've recently upgraded and previously had VW 1.8T. The fuel indicator on the VW would show full for what seemed like days - then it would quickly drop off. Half a tank meant a quarter! I suspect that it was designed this way. Why? I am not sure, but other driver have commented the same.
On the new S3 it seems to be an accurate representation - plus with the DIS you can easily see the mileage is left and watch it drop away with time.
I much prefer this accurate measurement of remaining fuel. If the dial says half a tank, that's what I expect!

Re: how exact is the fuel indicator?
Hey guys, be careful using the mileage left display on the FIS. I think it uses your current speed, throttle position, so on and so farth to determine the figure.
You probably already knew that, but just in case

Re: how exact is the fuel indicator?
I used to drive a '98 A3 1.8T(150), when the FIS displayed 0 Km left i could still do 10 KM without worries. It uses your average consumption over the last 30 Km (owners manual). I always drove it until it was empty and it took around 60 litres to fill.
I now drive a '02 A4 1.9 TDi, it takes 400 Km before the fuel gage move from full. I drive it until the FIS says 10 Km and filling it up the car takes 78.5 litres (audi says it has approx. 70 litre tank). I get an average of 1250 Km per tank and thats around town...
Just my experience... I trust my fuelgage and FIS
Have Fun!!

Re: how exact is the fuel indicator?
I really want my indicator to be more specific when it's near to empty. I really don't give a rats *** if it's full or 3/4 full, or half full. But when I'm low on fuel, a liter could mean the difference between a walk with a jerrycan or just being able to reach the station.
After the "ouf of fuel" light turns on, you can drive an extra 75 km safely.
I try to minimise my visits to the station, so I like to run it down and fill it up. I've been able to squeeze 56 liters in there, and regularly tank for over 50 liters, meaning I can drive around 1000 km with a full tank.

Re: how exact is the fuel indicator?
for what it's worth....
I picked up my new 2003 model year A3 1.8T about 3 weeks ago (now 1200 miles)
When the fuel gauge reads "R" (i.e. empty) and the DIS says 0 miles left, the tank took 45 litres.
Before anyone has a go at me, the earlier fills were when the gauge was higher - I'm still learning how accurate it is.
BTW - averaging 34.5 mpg, but that's probably because I'm not taking it to 4000rpm yet, and not flooring it for full turbo boost.
Great forum!
