How are the sticks in these cars? I heard with front-wheel drive cars, they can be really messy.

It's better than past VW shifters. Felt pretty average to me. If you want one, get it while you can. I've been shocked by the number of manual diehards defecting to the DSG.

TrueDelta's A3 page

good clutch pedal feedback. Throttle modulation with clutch is the tricky part, and you need to "fluff" the gas just a tiny bit when letting out the clutch or you'll get a slight lurch.
People comment a lot about the traction control being easy to set off in DSG cars, but with the stick this is far easier to modulate.
As with anything, it all depends on the design. Cable type shifters can feel vague if not designed well or are worn. Rod linkage shifters can devlop slack at joints and rattle as well as often being fussier to set up correctly if you ever need to adjust something.

My last car was also a VAG 6 speed, with the O2M transmission. Don't know if it's the same as is in the A3, but, the A3 is certainly less notchy than the VW was. (though, to tell the truth, I wasn't really that unhappy with the transmission in the GTI, the A3 is just a little smoother.).
