I am going to choose the VW Golf V6 4MOTION over the A3 1,8t quattro...

Please tell me, why I shouldn't or should I.
S3 is about £7000 more expensive in Finland than the Golf and it has a LOT smaller engine, but +6bhp. The engine in Golf will last a lot longer because it is a LOT bigger and it is a V6 not a four-pot. Otherwise pretty much the same car, except the image. I do not want to pay £34 000 for a four-pot.
The 4WD is the same as is the transmission.
A3 1,8t quattro costs about the same with all the extras and has -54bhp in Finland. It also has weaker transmission with (only) 5 gears. You can tune it to 215bhp which is 11bhp more than in Golf, but this way the engine and the cluch will blow up in no time or at least a lot faster than in S3 or the Golf. Image is plus in this one, but after the tuning the price has already gone past the Golf.
I don't really care about the image, but I do want my car to go fast in all conditions and surfaces. The car should also be in good shape after three years.
Tell me why I should go for an Audi instead of Golf.
Thanks for the opinions,
Dan

It's a combination of esthetics and performance. You feel it in your gut if it's right then the brain follows. Sounds like you're "thinking" your way into the VW. IMHO, you will spend the rest of your life at www.vwvortex. Good luck

Hi
You seem to be taking a very practical approach, but sod that this a car for gods sake and the question is which one do you want?
I saw a Golf V6 the other day and it does not look that much different to any other Golf, different alloys and twin tail pipes, they could have done much more.
Personally Audi, Golf is looking stodgy these days, V6 nice and smooth but I like my 4 pot turbo.
It may only last 150K but I will enjoy every single mile.

Hi Dan,
according to most reviews and tests on VW V6 4Motion and S3, the S3 is much sportier, whereas the VW is mostly for a family man.
I do not know what you prefer. Try to get a hold of a such a test.
The latest Car in Uk, has a comparison between those two and the Subary Impreza.
To tell you the truth, i prefer the S3.
Nikos.

Firstly, in your case, and I hate to say this, you will get more performance for your money if you buy the Golf rather than the A3 1.8TQ. ![Frown](https://www.audiworld.com/forums/images/smilies/frown.gif)
I have no idea which car is the better drive, but just looking at the performance figures, the Golf wins for the money.![Frown](https://www.audiworld.com/forums/images/smilies/frown.gif)
On saying that, other reasons to pick the A3 are:-
* much nicer looking car (in my opinion).
* it's an AUDI, four rings on your car keys looks better than VW.
* do you really want a VW? A brand than makes camper vans!!
* image (again): Audi will always be higher up the VAG brand ladder than VW.
* A3's are rarer than golfs
* the V6 Golf, doesn't stand out much from lesser golfs, e.g. a 1.6 Golf
But if you are not bothered about any of the above, then get the Golf
Cheers,
Alan.

Ive owned two of the cars in the test and now driven all three. Took the V6 4Motion out for a couple of runs.
The Golf is flawed as a package against the S3, but against the A3 its slightly different. Engine response in the Golf is very good (better than S3) and its certainly a very nice engine with great low down torque. The Golfs biggest flaw is the amount of roll in corners, and with std seats total lack of grip. Add the Leather Recaros (no cloth option in UK) and your car now costs pretty much the same as an S3.
The Golf is a Q car, which some might like, and if you change the suspension/roll bars and go for Recaros its a nice car. Engine sounds a lot nicer than any four pot.
V6 vs A3 I'd go V6 I'm afraid
