I am going to choose the VW Golf V6 4MOTION over the A3 1,8t quattro...

As audidudi (Andy) says below...
Ignoring image opinions, and ignoring the performance statistics - which one do you really want?
Which one put a great big smile across your face when you drove it?
Which one does your "gut feeling" say you should get?
Good luck,
AL

The impreza is all performance and nothing else but then we all knew that anyway.
The Golf is a superb compromise for the family man - i.e. more rear room for the kids and great round town driver for the wife (no need to worry about revving up to get easy and smooth take away from standstill) but a supremely competent cross country cruiser - and bloody fast.
If you want flair and true "driver appeal" the S3 wins hands down - real drivers love the surge a turbo gives and you can very cheaply get to 250hp and 352nm (MTM ECU). The steering in the S3 is far more communicative and the handling much sharper (although I suspect you could get close with some work on the Golf - add $$$s). Add recaros and air to the V6 and you are at S3 price anyway.
At the end of the day buy the flavour you like and you will be rapt with either.
Greg Spark

I have recently been through the same excercise, albeit A3T vs GTI 1.8T. After driving the cars (actually after just sitting in them) it was clear that my perceptions of the two changed completely from what I had read. Dispite the Audi being more cramped, expensive, harder to insure, and a longer wait, the two brands are miles apart in overall "feel" (IMHO). Quality is everything.
At the end of the day I don't look twice at ANY golf. The A3 is a GREAT looking car, the golf isn't.
Mind you I generally buy with my heart rather than my head...

and be sure you buy the one that you enjoy the most - asking us here what to buy is obviously biased - we will all say Audi - but it may not be for you - please don't buy on paper specs or prices - drive and enjoy.

as it would suit the classy image sought by many older buyers - again though, I guess it comes back to VAG strategy = they make the money anyway

The 4 motion is a larger engine, but it is laaazzzyyyy! If you want that then fine. The 1.8T (180) quattro is anything but that.
The point at which a 4 pot engine goes to sleep, is the time when the turbo cuts in.
I had a V6 last time, and apart from the noise of a V6, the wine of a turbo is much more fun, and drivable too!
The V6 has loads of torque but unless it is always pushed it doesn't feel very fast. The 1.8T is exactly the oposite and feels much quicker from standstill, just when you think you are running out of puff the turbo goes. believe me the Energizer bunny has nothing on the 1.8 engine at all!!
The other porblem is the golf. Everyone has one. next time you are out on the road look for A3's and then Golf's. the ratio is easily 8 or 10:1.
The other think is that the new facelifted 1.8T quattro now has a 6 speed as standard (bugger, blast, not fair at all) so there is little left to choose..
Laazzzyyy Driving in a common as muck car or,
**** off a stick in a classy looking car with few others on the road?
You choose..?

When u say £7000 does that include equipement that is standard on S3 and not on GOLF ? I do not know about finland specs but watch for cost of leather recaros, Xenon, air etc... on VW : the real difference may not be that great, if any.
What about std elements on S3 which are simply not available on Golf (17' 225MM 40% tyres for instance) ? Needs to be taken account of for a proper comparison.
Anyway, I thought that new price were often irrelevant when it comes to the real world cost of ownership and that what counted is ability for car to retain its value - Somehow I can't see the VW beat the S3 in that respect, so VW might actually prove + expensive to own.
ISN'T THE GOLF V6 the car which is VERY SIMILAR TO A GOLF SDI in appearance ? (only teasing)
I have driven Golf and liked it ; I just can't see in what it is better than a GOLF V5 even fwd.
THE S3 IS SPECIAL, RARE, DESIRABLE. THE GOLF IS COMPETENT, SENSIBLE, BUT DULL.
