Manufacturers are getting very clever about making it almost impossible for much DIY.
Bulbs are a pain in the *** - access either inaccessible for the DIY or use a custom tool to remove.

I replaced the stock bulbs with Sylvania Gold in both my 2006 A3 and my son's 2008 Jetta, it's a snap, about 10 minutes per car. The new bulbs are much brighter, a little pricey, and I think worth it.
