If you are in North America at least, any of the chain automotive parts houses can help you with lamps and advice.

I've had luck with Silverstars in the past. Anyone have a DIY for changing the bulbs? The manual just says to take it to your dealer. F that!

Default OK thanks will check out Silverstars

Manufacturers are getting very clever about making it almost impossible for much DIY.

Bulbs are a pain in the *** - access either inaccessible for the DIY or use a custom tool to remove.

Definitely find a good mechanic who loves VAG. (Independent Tuning in the Toronto area)

As it turned out, I discovered about 3 hours ago that one of the headlamps on my 2009 Jetta was burned out. I picked up a pair of H-7 lamps and popped them in. It took a total of less than 10 minutes without tools. My guess is that replacing headlamp bulbs on an A3 is similarly simple.

I replaced the stock bulbs with Sylvania Gold in both my 2006 A3 and my son's 2008 Jetta, it's a snap, about 10 minutes per car. The new bulbs are much brighter, a little pricey, and I think worth it.
