gut feel next day. Do not try to second guess yourself.
Personally I feel the A3 is much more nimble than the A4 for town use - the 2.0t especially. Passenger space is virtually identical, but cargo space is markedly more limited for the A3. The A3 3.2 retains much of the nimble feel, but gives you higher cornering limits for canyon carving and the like. The 3.2 takes a while to break in, so drive one with some miles if you can. You're stuck with DSG in the VR6 though.
The S6 is an excellent car. The only weak spot appears to be when people lower the car, which can introduce some odd driveline vibrations that are hard to cure.
The A3 and A4 2.0t will be easiest to mod if that is your thing.

Just curious: why do you say cargo space is more limited in the A3? The A4 is a sedan with a trunk. I would think the A3 cargo space would be much more usable with the rear seats folded than the A4 space.

I forgot the A4 comes in a station wagon format. So yes the A4 avant version would have more usable cargo space than the A3. I can't imagine it's nearly as sporty as the A3 though.

More so maybe than BMW or Mercedes. Weight isn't all that different from the A3 either. But suspension geometry and the fact that the power from the engine doesn't have to make a 45 degree angle change to get to the wheels, means less driveline losses for the A3.
Hence I suggest you drive all - preferably on the same day so your impressions are fresh.

You cannot put a set of golf clubs in the back of an A3 without putting the seats down. Bought my A3 3 weeks ago and just found this out last weekend
Kind of a pain because I have to take the child seats out to go golfing, but the car is enough fun that I don't mind too much.

and your tolerance for torque steer. Most folks agree that torque steer is an issue with the Front Trak models, but manual transmission owners like me, seem to report less occurances with it than DSG owners. It seems that DSG owners do adapt. Overall I don't find it a problem once good tires are fitted.
I'm not sure if Stasis or other tuners offer a real limited slip for DSG cars, but they do for stick cars.
