Default Instrument lights turn on at times.....

Hmmm. I have 11k on my car and thought I was crazy believing that the main cluster lights were on all the time, but not quite sure.

So oddly enough, out of happenstance, I pull int a dark parking garage from direct sunlight and the main cluster guages are dark and unreadable.

Later in the day, after a beer (one only) I am driving home during the late afternoon, and I notice what appears to be what I suspected all along, that the lamps are on (my lights are NOT on). Somehow the main cluster lamps turn on automatically on my car.

BTW, my car is a sport non premium model without auto headlamps and such high-brow features.

What is the criteria for when the lamps turn on, and conversely, when they turn off on our cars???

Default They should be on all the time...

and when it gets dark, the cluster gets dimmed down to remind you that it would be a good idea to turn on the lights.

Default I thought only the needles were lit all the time for US cars.

One of the popular VAG-COM mods is to enable full-time lighting of the gauges as well, like the UK versions.

Default Convenience package does that. Headlights, cluster, Nav are all ambient light dependent

and appear to be independent of each other. Depending on the outside lighting conditions (like driving down an avenue full of trees, sometimes just the cluster lights will turn on and not the headlights, or vice-versa. Yes, sometimes it doesn't turn on the cluster lights when it gets right away when you enter a tunnel or shade but usually will after just a little while.

As AudiA4B6US said, it's to remind you to turn on your headlights when it gets dark.

Default There is a light sensor next to 0 mph in your cluster

It senses the light and dimms the cluster, radio, switches and so on.

Default That's what MikeSS said...dash dial dims in dark areas to remind you to turn on the headlights.

The dash should brighten in bright lit areas. If your headlights are turned on the dash should be bright and never dim. Is this not the case?
