Default JSPerformance Short Shifter Review

After looking at several units and trying a few of them out, I finally settled on the <a href="http://jsperformance.ca/store/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=36&osCsid=a22c33cc4c0 f8e3657d26ad294ffa5c6">JSPerformance SS</a>.

JSPerformance claims that their normal shifter reduces 41%Y-axis and 17%X-axis, however they do measure the reductions slightly different than other companies. I am not 100% sure, but I believe they measure it at the shift distance itself, not the difference in distance from where the pin is located on the shift lever. Anyways, I didn't want as much of a reduction in Y-axis, so Jose made me a custom shifter with 30% Y-axis and 17% X-axis.

Results?

Well the thing is absolutely damn smooth! The 30/17 ratio actually maintained the same gear pattern as stock, so I didn't have a ridiculous change in x-axis vs y-axis travel. Can still two-finger-shift every gear and shift effort is minimally increased. The instructions that came with the JSP were abolutely clear and concise. They even included the shifter alignment tool that is of higher quality than the Dieselgeek "bent nail". I ended up adjusting the cables 4x and found that even a .5mm difference in the side-to-side cable makes a huge difference in smoothness.

Prior to purchasing the JSP, I testdrove a vehicle with the HPA 20-35% y-axis SS. 20% on the HPA translated to more of a 40-50% reduction at the shifter and 35% was maybe more like 70%. On 35%, the shifter was hard and deliberate to get into gear. I didn't care for it much. While the HPA 20% was liveable, it felt strange with stock side to side, especially executing a 4th to 5th gear change. It was almost as if the x-axis motion was longer than the y-axis. I've also driven DG, and it was way too mechanical for me.

Anyways, the JSP is a great shifter for those that love the stock smoothness and effortless shifting. The one tip I can offer is to make sure that the side-to-side adjustment is absolutely perfect. I've found the best way to see if you have it properly centered is to put it in 3rd or 4th gear after you finish the adjustment and tap on the shift **** in both left to right directions. The **** should be able to move slightly in each direction. That would indicate that there is no pre-load on the shift bushing and that it is perfectly centered over the pin. I also greased all the pins with Mobil 1 Synthetic Grease, however the stock grease looked to be a dark moly-fortified grease. I will probably try some Valvoline synpower moly grease or some CRC synthetic grease . . . . both of which are moly fortified. The stock grease smelled most like the synpower grease that I've used before.

Default Nice write up, Crew. Did getting the shifter customized cost more? And...

I'm assuming the reason you wanted the shifter customized in the first place was to get the ratio close to stock ratio.

I'm going to save your write-up until I have enough money for this mod.

Default no extra cost . . . I chose the 30% just because I wanted it to match up more evenly

with the side to side reduction.
