Soon to be facing this dilemma myself.
2x what Jack said about limited trunk space. Certain strollers only fit on an angle and costco runs have resulted in our son holding a 8 pak of toilet paper in his lap 1! :-)

I put a kidcraft train table 41" wide and about 5.5' long into the back of the a3 with the seats down. Just fit. It was in a flat box.
But I had to go back for it since you cnt fold the seats down with the baby seat in there.
I dunno, we only have one kid and while I wouldnt take the A3 on long trips with the baby, its fine for most daily runs with him in it. We're not pack rats either and my trunk currently contains:
1 bottle detailer spray
1 rain jacket
1 set of hiking boots
1 gallon bottle of quick-ice melt
1 roll paper towels

more trunk space. same performance, maybe a little slower. same 6speed dsg, same hp, tq, motor.
and about $5-10k cheaper.<ul><li><a href="http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Drives/FirstDrives/articleId=107126">http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Drives/FirstDrives/articleId=107126</a</li></ul>

my A3 could. I also have a 2 year-old (seems to be popular around here) and everything fits fine. I don't think it's anything like the Jeep Cherokee, which like many American SUVs has crappy rear seat space. On long trips, however, the A3 is tough and we definitely defer to the "big car."

I have a 4 and 7 yrd old - no complaints yet.
3 kids is pain if two or more have boosters.
trunk space is also an issue, but I guess you can use the cherokee for hauls.
