Loud Engine

Hi all
I've had my A3 T for almost a year (28 500km) and I remember when I got it you couldn't hear the car idling. Now on the other hand it sounds like a distant lawn-mower. On the open road it is a bit annoying, even with the radio on(loud) you have this buzzing in the background. Is it normal for a car this old or must I approach my dealer and complain?
What could it be?
Any help appreciated!!!
Thanx
TuT

it is your heightened perception of the characteristics of the engine. This may be a personal thing, but I always find that having driven a car for a month or two I start to notice the engine, suspension etc noises more. I'm sure my A3 is noisier now than when new but others who use the car say this is not the case!
Obviously, you may very well have a problem which is best checked out especially as it is just under a year old (i.e. warranty intact), just another thought for you! Get the dealer to let you try one of their A3s for comparison.

If you were not talking about 1.8T unit which I think is of outstanding quality and smoothness (due to its 5V technology) I would say check what kind of oil your engine was fed. But I am sure that Audi would have put decent stuff at 15k km's service. You had a 15k service, didn't you? Any top brand synthetic stuff should have kept this engine very happy. I wouldn't go as far as calling my 1.8T noisy but recent 1y/12,000km service and new oil (Shell Helix) made it even quieter.

I have a 1.8 Non Turbo, do you think that the oil makes a difference? I have recently driven a 1.6 A3 and thought that the engine was not as loud as my 1.8.
Any thoughts?
Thanks

Good brand synthetic is enough for 1.8T or for that matter any modern engine. Did you ever check you oil level? If not do it right now!Lubricants I think are only for older engines who have more friction etc. I wouldn't worry about the lubricant. If noise is there after the normal service take your service-man for a drive, get a loan car and don't come back till they fix whatever is bad...

At best, I would be surprised if oil made much difference. I used to notice big difference on 1993 Jeep 4.0L engine after I ran a can of STP cleaner through it and then gave it a dose of Mobil 1, but on Audi engines I would be surprised. Then again I don't understand how much noise are you getting, under what circumstances, where, since when?

Since your post I've been trying to determine if my engine has become louder as the mileage has increased. At idle the car is still very quiet, however at higher revs it now sounds very coarse and "thrashy".
I have noticed this more since the cars recent service at 20410miles, and I don't understand why the engine sounds and "feels" different. It feels coarser, and not as free revving. I certainly can't put it all down to the K&N panel filter that I have fitted. I also made sure the dealer used Mobil 1 at the service - so things should be smooth.
Has anyone else experienced the above?
