doesn't sell by the boatload in North America isn't going to panic them, because Audi can sell every one it makes for more money in Europe. They put their toe in the water to test the demand for a compact luxury car. Not much lost in doing that. Can't blame them for not giving them away here.
The A3 rides on the coat-tails of the volumes sellers of the Jetta, Golf, and GTi. It's not a primary stand-alone model. I'm glad we get anything at all, since Audi doesn't require any A3 sales here to make the A3 a success in the larger sense.
Given the small profit margins on the A3, even if the dealers made absolutely no money on the deal, it wouldn't make much more than maybe a $50 per month difference in lease cost. Not sure what people expect, but if $50 a month doesn't make them excited.......
In any case, I get a chuckle when people who have been used to subvented leases go shopping for cars that aren't subvented. Volvo, Saab, until recently Audi, etc. I used to have people coming in with $40K A6 Avants, thinking they could lease a Passat for less, when the opposite was true!
You and binky made some good points
The Volvo C30 thread is a good thought provoker too. The decline in A3 sales seems to be mirrored by lack of ads. At least Audi has a somewhat youthful, sporty, and outdoorsy demographic. Volvo has ..... Birkinstocks? ;-)

They are comparable in physical dimensions, the engine is the same and they both come in a DSG type configuration. The similaries don't end there, but the pricing does. IMO the drop in sales started after the GTI got some "teeth" in the marketplace.
When I consider the two, my feelings on the matter are listed below:
-The A3 has a more refined and luxurious interior, and let's face it, interior design and quality of build matters for those of us who are road warriors or have to deal with long commute times.
-I also prefer a wider track for obvious reasons.
Rather than pointing out what I have missed IYHO, carry on this thread and list your observations or thoughts on the matter. The pic below is a sample of the quality of interior build on the Audi Roadjet concept, but I think it illustrates the forward thinking that the Audi group demonstrates with these progressive designs. I can't imaging buying any other marque anymore.

If I was a lesbian, and you were a girl, I'd have my way with you.

I had a '99 for 3 years. Handling was all it was good for. Engine was too puny and aftermarket mods were way too pricey for what you get. The new MX-5 is much more competent, but they design... goofy lookin' thing. :-P
