Minor beef with Audi - my flame suit is on...

Generally speaking, the top-of-the-line version of a given model are (1) the most expensive and (2) if money were no object, the ones that people tend to want. Examples that quickly come to mind: RS4; R32; 900 turbo; Cayman S; etc.
They're usually differentiated from the 'lesser' brethren by trim, exhaust tips, wheel flares, etc.
In short, even if it's de-badged or has different wheels on it, you can still which model it is.
I'm just a wee-bit annoyed with Audi that they didn't differentiate the 2.0 s-line from the 3.2 s-line in any way (except for the wheels).

Most times, it will take a keen eye with a lot of knowledge about Audis to differentiate the cars.
S-line is just a package that gives you a sportier look and handling from a base unit. The 3.2 S-line maybe top of the line for us, but other markets have the S3.
Even on their S cars, the differences are nil. Example, B7 S4s: "Aluminum Look" mirrors (these were real aluminum on my B6 S4)
Door blades
One piece bumpers
Tiny spoiler
Specific S4 colors (Nogaro Blue, Yellow)
Recaros
Exhilirating V8
For someone who does not know Audis, it's just an A4.
Someone at Audi probably has a good sense of humor. Imagine getting passed by a station wagon (Avants in Audi speak) with an RS sticker on the hatch.
Audi used to make their top of the line RS models only on the Avant models. RS2, B5 RS4. These models were never sold in the US. The first time they made an RS car based on a sedan is with the RS6. They wanted to introduce the RS line to the US and wanted to take a less risky approach. The solution, an RS6 sedan.
