Default my A3 trade-in lowballed

I was looking forward to getting a new Audi. Got offered a pretty dismal sum for my beautiful 06 A3 3.2Q s-line all options except nav 26K miles.
What has been your experience with the resale of your A3 ( stealership or otherwise?

Same thing with all hi end vehicles. My X3 quotes at several thousand (edmunds and KBB) above what I was offered as a trade in.

It is the entry level stuff that is getting the big dollars. My wife got several thousand over the posted trade in value on her Honda.

Gonna suck it up and still get the 2011 A3 when pricing is posted. Sorry Mr. Dealer man, but being told I will get $300 over invoice if I put a deposit down just makes me suspicious.

kind of funny. these stealerships are lame! before i purchased my new '10 A3. i asked a few dealerships that had CPO '07 A3 S-LINES on the lot. they would not budge on the prices. to the point where buying a brand new '10 was much smarter purchase. all the stealerships were stating that wholesale on used 07 A3 S-LINE'S were high and couldn't do much. all of them settled at about $24k-$25k for 07 A3, S-LINE, with low miles like yours.

what did they offer you?

they offered 16.5K ( and hinted they might be able to throw in another 500 extra, just a special favor for me)! it costs them about 1K to CPO these things, so even if they sell it at a big discount, say 22K, they would still make a boat load of money. That is why I bolted out, it was definitely attempted robbery.

Withougt tipping my hand. They offered $6k below what they were selling a like kind of mine that had 20k more in miles.

My X3 is only two years old with 20k in miles in mint condition. Dealerships are all thieves, what do you expect.

wow, 16.5k seems awfully low. i wonder what carmax would give you for it. i've never been to carmax but just out of curiousity.

Carmax gave me more for my truck when I traded for my s5 I would try them. But dealerships or any type of business is out there to make money how do you think they pay for that really nice building you will always get f**ked over when you buy a car no mater how good of deal. My buddy that is a general manager of a Ford lot said, the difference between a good deal and a bad deal is $2k so I shopped 5 dealers and the best I could do was $1900 off sticker with free audi care but try Carmax they are good

I went to five different sources and all offered the same amount including Carmax. They are going off auction pricing for higher end vehicles.

My wife's Honda got $1k above blue book, whereas my X3 was $2k below blue book. Hers was in fair condition. Mine is showroom perfect. It is the "Joe Average" vehicle that gets the good return.

Don't expect any more from Carmax. They low balled me there as well.

an update: I went to another dealer in town that traded it in for 18K. Not great , but I did not have time/ patience for a private sale. Ugh.
I traded for a new A5 3.2 ( pics in the A5 forum). Great car , but will defnitly miss my A3.
In end, a private sale is probbaly the only way to get a fair deal as they are going off auction prices as Evlengr said.
