my service light has been on since about 9700 miles... what?

Yeah and make sure they only reset the light not the interval
If they reset the interval now it will start to come on at 20, 30, 40k etc etc... Just have them reset the light, changing channel 2 from 1 to 0. But do not touch the other blocks.
Then when you go in for a 5k make sure you tell the dealer it was not properly setup and they need to change the intervals to 10K miles.
Or you can leave it at 5K and do oil changes every 5K which is what I do..
