Hey guys trying to do my oil change and not sure what to use. I can't find 5w 40 anywhere besides the kind that says for truucks. If i used mobile 1 0w 30 would that be ok? (it says it exceeds 5w 30 warranty requirements)?

The oil requirements on the 2.0T are very strict and Audi/VW state that the oil has to meet the spec identified as VW 502.00 and 505.01. These designations have to be posted on the label of the oil. All of the oils I have found that meet these requirements have been synthetic.
Factory fill on my 2007 A3 was Castrol 5-40 Synthetic (stamped on the oil fill cap). I have used it for warm weather changes and to date (24K) have not had any issues including not having to add oil between fills. However, in the winter, I switch to Mobil 1 0-40 - it also meets the VW 502.00 spec.
With the castrol, hard running on the highway in warm weather (70-90 mph, 5th and 6th gear), the oil temp usually runs in the 210-212F range.
Recently, I won a free case of oil - brand name Total - in the 5-40 full synthetic range (it meets the VW spec) and just tried it at the last oil change (it was free...) It has been in there about 1,000 miles and the oil temps have not gone above 203F. Lower temps is a claim their tech made at the Porsche meeting - Seems to be true.
Anyway, Castrol 5-40 SynTech and Mobil 1 0-40 both are available at WalMart / AutoZone / Pep Boys / et al. Both meet the manufacturer's specs and with a good filter (I buy mine via the "Internets" from ECS) you should be doing right by your ride. I bought a magnetic drain plug from ECS too -all of my Porsches have had them from the factory so I upgraded to one for the A3.

I'm running Mobile 1 0-40 and over a 40 mile trip at 100F with the cruise set at 75mph the engine temp was a constant 204F, and I got 27 mpg avg.

I run Mobil 1 0-40 as well. The outside temp in my area goes from say 20 degrees in winter to maybe even 110. Should I keep running this, or can I switch to a different viscosity? Yea, still a n00b

I like the Mobile 0-40 because it's also in my BMW. Though, I never have to top up the BMW come to think of it.
