Just traded in my '01 allroad (143k great miles) for a Moro blue 3.2 a3. I also have a Mini S which I will sell shortly. Like many others the a3 is an amazing alternative to the ar but the all season tires have to go! The Mini is clearly a better handling car but the ride is so taut, especially with the runflats. One of the best things about the Mini (along w/ the super fun and responsive handling) is the resale value. I'll get over the loss. I have two very low mileage Michelin Alpin 17" snow tires for the allroad (4k miles) if anyone is interested; $ 200 plus shipping.

Sorry just two. Due to the set these replaced having uneven wear. But the same tire is available from TireRack for $144.00 (price drop so I'd go to $175 for both plus the shipping; I paid $329 w/ tax & ship.in Jan.'06): Michelin Pilot Alpin PA2Size: 225/55VR17 Serv. Desc: 101V Load Rating XL

I've accumulated about 700 miles on an allroad, so I have a little bit of experience.
The allroad is more comfortable. In comparison, it feels like a boat. You feel like sitting on a couch, which is not a bad thing, except maybe in a car that you want to be a good handler. The 2.7T is a powerful engine but there is noticeable turbo lag off the line. If you thought that the 3.2's fuel efficiency sucked, think again. The allroad is a guzzler!
If you need the offroad capabilities that the allroad offers, then there is no comparison. If the smaller package of the A3 is sufficient, it is definitely the funner car. If you like boats, go with the allroad.
All of that is just MHO.
