Few points between A4 and A3
Drive them back to back.
I have an 06 2.0t 6MT and have had a 08 2.0tQ A4 loaner a few times. While on paper they are fairly close, and the interiors are pretty close, they drive very differently.
I keep finding myself saying "Yeah, I could live with this car" when I drop the A4 off and as I'm pulling out in the A3, it's "What was I thinking?"
For me, the front seats are close enough to be the same. The back seats are slightly smaller, but the only person that sits back there is my 2 year old. For me, the hatchback form factor is FAR and AWAY the big reason for me. Just this past month, I moved some outdoor toys, a bed, a mattress and did a run from Ikea (not all at the same time). None of the items I was able to put in the hatchback would have fit in the A4s truck. I even picked up a bike seat for my son that didn't fit in the trunk of the A4 and I had to put in the back seat. That easily would have fit in the A3.
That being said, there are a bunch of "little things" that I really liked better about the A4, but they were all really minor.
Definitely drive them both before you spend more money on the A4 and realize the A3 is more fun to drive.

If you're planning a family, definitely go A3.
stroller/gear management alone is far superior in the A3. When you become (or plan) to become a mommy its time to throw out concepts like "which is cooler" and go for the model (between the two) that is "cool enough" that provides the most utility.
Just my opinion, obviously.
A4 (2008 model) has a few extra features, but nothing I'd think you'd die without (like homelink embedded garage door controller in the visor).

I've got the two-tone gray seats in my car.
And I'm a bit disappointed with the leather quality. The leather that makes up the darker areas of the seat don't have a consistent grain (or feel). The seats pictured above appear to be nappa leather.

welcome and...
you say a smaller car is more your style. well the new A4, although very attractive and a huge improvement over the old model, it's a big car.
I think if you drove both cars, the A3 would clearly be your choice.
Rear seats are practically the same (comfortable). Not the size of the TL rear seats. But decent. Trunk space is a knockout, the A4 destroys the A3. All of that said, I love the versatility of a hatchback.
