Default Observations about R32 v. A3 popularity

The thread below is quite long, which leads me to believe that there's a lot to be talked about between the two. My contribution to the conversation is this: there are a lot of MK4 R32s running around here (Burlington, VT) as well as a number of A3s (mostly 2.0) - in fact, I've seen as many as 4 within my periferal vision at one time. Why then, in the past year and a half, haven't I seen a single MK5-gen R32? Seem odd? Did they sell out like the MK4 - or were dealers giving them away?

Default giving them away 1/2 way through. think there are still a few left (new).

A3 is a daily driver.

R32 can be a weekend toy. Also, there were prolly about 6000-7500 A3s sold in the US, each year from 2005 to 2008. 5000 R32s were made for MY2008. Maybe that is why you don't see as many?

Default There are about 138 unsold as of 1 January....

...but most of those have lots of demo miles. Most have somewhere between 250 and 1000 miles. OTOH, $28k for a non-nav R32 seems to be a do-able price...

Default 138 - crazy! lots of R32 vs A3 info:

138 remaining Jane 09, wow.. either help the mpgs or more power and that car would have sold out very quickly.

I did drive one btw, when I was shopping around over the summer. I will give you guys some info on the r+d I did back then..

I posted a link to some major comparison info. I was seriously going to buy a R32. But I drive it and didn't fall in love.

A3 vs R32 discussion from a while back. No 2.0TQ was avail at the time.

Default Ahhh, we're in January, not June...

How many MK IV Rs were left in January?

It is obvious that you really dislike the car, but check how many unsold '08 BMWs or MBs are on the lot - not to mention any Japanese brand.

Default If the R32 had 3 pedals, I'd probably be in one today.

I think the lack of a manual had a lot to do with the lackluster sales of the MkV R32 versus the MkIV. Several folks I have talked to said that was a deal breaker for them. That's anecdotal, but it has to carry over with some bit of weight.

Default not a great indicator but it looks like there aren't a lot of R32's in VT

(Obviously, the map is dependent on the owner registering the car)

Alot of people cross shopped the two in 2008 because it's basically an A3 3.2Q at a $5K discount. If you don't need the 5-Doors, then you have to really value the interior and exterior of the A3 to make a valid case for the added cost.

Couple that with the fact that VW's now hold their value as well as Honda's.

VW may have cannibalized a lot of A3 sales w/ the R32 in 2008.

http://www.usr32registry.org/r32s/map</a

Default I've only seen two other MK4 R32s around burlington.

See A3s waaaay more. Have not seen a single MK5 R32 in VT.

I live in Williston. Flash the lights if you ever see a DBP MKIV R32 in the area.

Was for me. I would have bought a new MK5 instead of my MK4 if the MK5 had a 6MT
