Mobil 1 (0w40) might suit the UK conditions, but...

range from 5 to 35 degrees Celsius,
sometimes up to 45 degrees on a very hot
summer, Audi recomends Mobil 1 5W40 for
15000Km interval.

Well spotted...
Sounds pretty genuine. Whether the guy is an race engineer or not, what he said about VW engineers working on which oil is best for the car day-in day-out *is* probably true.
Glad I did the right thing and waited till 10K miles.
I started changing my oil at 5K intervals at 15000 miles.
