Default Please Help: clutch position sensor issue

Hey all. First time here. I have an 07 A3 Sportback. This weekend, I couldn't start it. Gauge cluster is telling me that I need to press down the clutch, which I was. I left it alone for a while and then it started fine. Next day, it started at least 6 times as I was testing it. Clutch is working fine otherwise.
I want to check the clutch position sensor first, but my issue is that I'm getting all kinds of conflicting info online (not from this site). I'm heading that the sensor is on the engine side of the firewall and others where it's above the clutch pedal. I've also seen two different looking parts when I search for it. One is a plug and play sensor and the other has a plunger like piece. I can't figure out which I need to look into or where to look. I removed the kickplate and searched around the pedals and didn't see anything.
This is my second German car. I had a pos 96 Jetta that was a pain in the ***. I've worked on Hondas and Subarus extensively, so I've got mechanical experience. This Audi is a whole new and interesting animal. Any and all help is greatly appreciated.
