Using the payment estimator on audiusa.com, the premier purchase estimator for the A3 is less expensive (considerable) than the lease. Yet it explains that it functions like a lease, in that at the end of the period you can simply turn the car in instead of purchasing it. I must be missing something here.

I think it's going away soon. It was introduced to protect the manufacturer from vicarious liability laws in some states.

Usually if you compare all the fine print, the costs are comparable to a lease.
