between 87 and 93 octane in my area has remained constant at $0.20. Only the base price of gas has risen, so I'd still only save about three bucks a tank. When a full tank can cost $45, what's the point? I'll keep running 93.

on his commute to work. Over time he found that with regular fuel, his car got worse fuel mileage, essentially negating the savings at the pump. Something worth noting and pondering.

Let say 12,000 miles a year. My current MPG is 27-28 (let say 27) => 444 galons/year
If I dumped 87 => save $88.8/year
Well, I spent 30K for the car so why care for $89/year? On top of that, I cannot forgive myself if I know it's not right and still doing it. Keeping my engine in good performance is my number one priority.

..and it seems people have seen 10% drop.
Pity the C&D article does not address this, but since its dated 11/2001 when gas was < $2.00, I'll forgive them.

Looks like oil refiners are getting a break with regards to environmental concerns. Wonder if fuel quality will also slip? If so, our FSI engines may be more vulnerable. As it is, we don't get the lean burn function that would help save fuel, because sulphur levels in gas here is already too high.
In the end I agree with a/v guy, if you can afford to buy a $30K car, a few cents filling up shouldn't matter. If it does, you bought the wrong car.
"WASHINGTON Apr 25, 2006 (AP)-- President Bush on Tuesday ordered a temporary suspension of environmental rules for gasoline, making it easier for refiners to meet demand and possibly dampen prices at the pump. He also halted for the summer the purchase of crude oil for the government's emergency reserve...."<ul><li><a href="http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/wireStory?id=1887632&CMP=OTC-RSSFeeds0312">whole thing</a></li></ul>
