Re: None, its fairly useless and poorly manufactured.
Dave, if you are under the hood this w/e, or anyone else, can you take a pic of the factory air filter. I heard, maybe from you, that it's a decent filter already, with high air flow capacity.

Yes there are minimal benefits with a drop in filter. Certain ones will give higher peak flow
however the K&N is so poorly constructed that the reduced exposed surface area negates any flow increase the cotton gauze membrane may offer.

It doesn't totally negate any gains
It could possibly see better gains but there are other factors.
not that this is the case with the A3 but the Mk4 VWs had a wall in the airbox with the thickness of the factory filter it touchd this wall and actually blocked off half the filter. By installing an aftermarket filter that was not as thick you now got all of the surface area opened up.
Even with that wall removed I saw gains at the wheels of 7ish hp over a stock airfilter with a K&N filter installed.. I saw gains of 11ish hp with an ITG filter instaled.. sall same car same day same dyno.. same airbox etc etc etc. I didn't even shut the car off between runs I simply swapped filters and did runs with each. I even went back and did the stock one again last to ensure nothing else changed that was altering the results.
The K&N may have slighly reduced surface area vs stock filter however with the greater number of folds on the stock filter packed tightly together you end up with essentially a solid paper block.. Like trying to pull air through the yellow pages.. The K&N offers less resistance in its smaller surface area so it tends to even out.
However yes this does mean that they are not always going to filter as well as a stock paper filter.
