Default Question about the Bentley DVD

How detailed is the manual? For instance, I just brought my car in for service and they said my brake pads needed replacing (all four corners) and the front rotors as well. Will the Bentley DVD list what the specs on a new rotor should be and how far down it can be worn? If so is it that detailed for everything on the car?

Default They're pretty detailed. I just looked, rotor wear specs are in my A8 e-manual.

I assume they're in my A6 e-manual, too.

Rotor specs are often cast/machined into the rotor.

Default Caution if you have Vista (and request for Vista help)

I just purchased the DVD, and am trying to run it with Vista, service pack 1 (the latest version). I have not been able to get the "eBahn Reader" product (which comes with the DVD and is necessary to read the info on the DVD) to start. Bentley warns about Vista difficulties, but they do say that they can work people through the issues.

I have been trying to get customer support from them, and it is slow and simplistic. I told them I tried all of the things in their FAQ and wiki site, specifically such as run as administrator, and run in XP compatibility mode. Then they reply back almost a week later and suggest I try to run in administrator mode and let them know how it goes. Huh? Apparently didn't bother to read my message.

Anybody had similar issues and manage to work around them? I can provide more detail of what happens (specific dll file reported to be an issue, etc.) if there's anyone out there that has been through it.

Default You may be able to get the information you're asking, but it gets complicated.

There's a vehicle information sticker in your car's wheel well(should also be located in you your owner's manual). Depending on how your A3 is equipped, there are codes on that sticker that correspond to the specific brakes installed on you car. You'll need these codes to know what the wear limits are on your particular brake system.

In general, it's hit-or-miss as to whether you'll find the information you need in a Bentley automotive DVD. The information may be there, but actually finding it can be a challenge since their search and navigation features kind of suck.

Default

Well, I'd be running it on a MacBookPro in an XP VM so I should be good.

Default I have it working in Vista on a Mac Book Pro in a VM (and natively when I boot Vista directly)

I had a few problems when I first installed the Bentley's stuff on an XP machine a year ago, but when I set up my Vista machine a couple of months ago, it seemed to go much smoother. It's hard for me to remember the installation details now, but if you shoot me a private email, I'll try to answer your questions.

Default Got it working

The issue was with "User Account Control". That has to be enabled, even though it apparently came disabled on both of my Vista computers. I was running as administrator, but that wasn't enough. (For reference for anyone else - go to User Accounts in the Control Panel, then click on "turn user account control on or off" and turn it on, then restart computer for it to take effect.

The price I pay for this is that I now get annoying messages from my computer asking for my permission to open certain programs, like eBahn. I can get rid of those by turning user account control back off, but then eBahn wouldn't work again.

I do still have an issue with the program in that it won't open certain pages without a fatal error. An example is the "workshop tools" page. It asks for dll files that it can't find, so I'm not sure if this is Vista or eBahn's issue.
