Default Ravenx et. al. Here's the data about VSI you were after.

This is an excerpt from the audi info I was given...

What are Variable Service Intervals?
A more intelligent approach to servicing where the frequency of services is tailored to the way you drive. New onboard technology offers the potential for longer service intervals and advises the driver when a workshop visit is due.

What can I expect between services?
There is no predetermined time for a service. Depending on how you drive in the interval will be up to 19,000 miles for petrol engines, 22,000 miles for V6 diesels and 30,000 miles for 4-cylinder diesels. A service will always be needed after 2 years

How do I know if it applies to my car?
Most models from model year 2000 are equipped with the new technology. If you have any doubt your Audi Centre will be pleased to check your car for you.

What is the new technology?
Your car is designed to use a new generation of Longlife oils with better resistance to ageing and high temperatures. It is also equipped with a range of sensors to electronically monitor oil temperature, oil pressure, oil level and brake pad wear. These send a signal to a dashboard display giving you approximately 1,800 miles notice that a service is due.

So there you have it..

Default Thanx a lot Dave

So if I understand correctly, this new technology cannot be applied to my car, since it requires data from some sensors, which I presume my car doesn't have (built 11/99). Is that a true assumption?

Default Assumption absolutely correct Ravenx

I questioned the dealer and I gather that the only changes are the sensors and the dashboard display (my data port is in a different location too). I'm wondering if they changed any engine parts?

Default What Longlife oils ? = Paul ag PLEASE

Very interested by VSI - I have a recent S3 which has VSI and consequently requires that I only top up the oil with oil conforming to vw503 01 (vw 502 00 can be used in "exceptional circumstances" but no more than 0.5 litre can be used).
PROBLEM = neither my UK dealer or Audi UK know of any oil conforming with vw503 01 = absurd or what ? They say that Castrol SLX does and that the label has not been updated as it only shows conformity with 502 00 = dodgy.
Question = does anyone know of an oil OFFICIALY conforming to vw503 01 ? If so which one(s) please ? I need to top up soon...

My copy of the Audi Specification Guide for Castrol shows SLX as 503.01 compliant, just confirmed by my dealer, as my S3 is for an oil change today. Apparently SLX is luminous green in colour?!
Doug Ramage

That's not what my dealer told me. My S3 is build 6/99 and VSI can be activated on it - he went and tested it. Anyway all will be revealed today when it comes back from its 1st Inspection oil change.
Doug Ramage

Default Another point..

Ravenx tells me that all s3's have the extra sensors on the car due to the s3 dashboard design - so maybe you can activate it on this.

The leaflet from audi states categorically that this cannot be done, however, maybe it pertains to all the non "s" models ???
