The other day I thought I would try & find out why my rear speakers were not working ('98 1.8 sport). I finally got the rear quarter panel off to find a great wodge of POLYSTYRENE! Wot no rear speakers? That's a bit cheap don't ya think?

I didn't see any wiring but I did not really look for it. The rear panel is not too challenging to remove but there is no obvious way of attaching a speaker in the cavity. Audi might do a fitting kit. I would think that the wiring should be present as the speaker grills are there so some A3s must have speakers and the speaker wires are usually part of the wiring loom.

The rear speakers in the A3 run off an amp in the sub woofer (the plastic box in the nearside rear wing, behind the removable panel in the lefthand side of the boot). If you have the sub woofer you should have the rear speakers, or at least the wiring. I'm guessing you don't have the sub, Check in the cubby hole for the sub wiring loom, it will be a red plug with about 12 wires. If you don't have the loom you'll need to install a 2 channel amp behind the rear speaker panel, run a mini ISO to RCA adapter from the head unit to the amp, and run a power cord from the battery. Then make a couple of 12mm MDF spacer rings that fit over the mounting posts on the rear speaker panels to mount some decent aftermarket 6.5" or 6x9" component speakers. That's a lot of work. Can't believe Audi would scrimp on £20 worth of components on such an expensive car.
